Climate Carnival – “Its a Big Tent!”

May 13

May 13, 2017
Noon until 8 PM followed by an After-Party

ANNOUNCING

This year, we’re stepping away from the formal conference and emerging into a vibrant educational faire – where keynote speakers & plenary panels can come alive with artistic expression, hands-on workshops, deep community interaction, live music, and more…  Introducing, Abundance NC’s 2017 Climate Carnival in partnership with Chatham County.

CLIMATE CARNIVAL VS. CLIMATE CONFERENCE

The goal in hosting a Climate Carnival as opposed to a Climate Change Conference is to attract, not just climate change activists and those already involved in the movement, but also families and children, young and old, wealthy and poor, and people from all walks of life to come, learn, participate and play. Individuals should then leave the event with a greater understanding of what climate change means for all of us as citizens of Earth, and what each of us can do to help.

The Carnival will not focus on the very frightening look forward for the planet in a changing climate, although this information will certainly be evident through the various activities throughout the day. Instead, it will focus on all of the opportunities each of us has to make a difference in helping the planet move forward towards a sustainable, healthier ecosystem where all species thrive. It will be a hopeful, positive event of empowerment and motivation.

MAY 12 – Amuse Bouche

Keeping with our Climate Change Conference tradition, we’ll hold our annual Amuse Bouche the night before the carnival!

Friday evening will feature a speaker panel moderated by local NPR affiliate journalist, Frank Stasio. Panel speakers tentatively include a climate scientist, a meteorologist, a climate communications expert, and a clean renewables advocate working with local jurisdictions in North Carolina. We hope Friday night will give you a small taste of what’s to come!

MAY 13 – Climate Carnival

Saturday’s carnival will include hands-on activities, short films, education tables, local organization booths related to the climate movement and the environment, a trade fair of artists and vendors boasting eco-friendly products or services, live music, artistic performances, food vendors, and several speaker sessions of all varieties throughout the day. The evening will wrap up with an After Party featuring local music, food, and local “brews” of all varieties!

Examples of carnival activities may include demonstrations of the greenhouse effect, a composting and soil-building workshop, organic gardening learning tours, solar energy learning tours, musical representations of our changing climates, a climate walk, a climate change themed poetry slam, storytellers, a hydroponics workshop, etc. Educational tables will likely include such topics as “How to Talk to Kids About Climate,” “Tools and Solutions for Policy-Makers,” “The Intersection of Racial Justice and Climate Justice,” “Resources, Recycling, Reusing,” “The Dangerous Chemicals All Around Us,” “Climate and Weather,” and “Living Sustainably.”

Climate Carnival will be priced on a sliding scale!
