Spin to Unwind: Yarn Spinning

In this workshop, you will learn the skill of spinning cotton yarn on a supported spindle for enjoyment and meditation.

Materials provided: Takhli spindle, cotton combs, 2oz Just Ginned organic cotton. This is all that is needed to produce a skein of lace weight cotton yarn.Time: This class can be accomplished in 2 hours or extended to 3 hours (at no additional cost) to allow for longer discussion and practice time.Goal: This class teaches the basic techniques of cotton preparation and hand spinning. The craft is simple, but takes practice to do it well.Once the method is taught, the remainder of the class time will be spent on practice, problem solving and discussion. I will discuss topics including, growing cotton, history of spinning, organic verses conventional cotton, color grown cotton, yarn weight, plying, and much more.

Meditation: For generations spinning has been used to facilitate meditation. Gandhi encouraged his people to spin for meditation. This class will discuss this topic during the practice time. The class can also be followed by any number of spinning/meditation sessions at later dates.

These are very rich and rewarding sessions offering practice time, personal growth and group bonding.

About the instructor:

Julie MooreJulie Moore is owner of Fiberactive Organics, L3C, www.fiberactiveorganics.com

At Fiberactive Organics, she designs an array fiber products utilizing organic cotton in several forms as well as post industrial fabric scraps. 
She personally handles all product design, and publishes the Earthlines series of continuous line quilting designs. She’s also a teacher and guest lecturer, and gives private lessons to large groups; schools and universities 
special projects for any age group. Symposiums in textile techniques, business management, entrepreneurship.
Julie has taught and done demos at Cary Lazy Daze, Historic Yates Mill Harvest Festival, Spoonflower, Yarn Tree Studio, Recyclique, 4H, Girl Scouts, Twisted Threads Fiberarts Guild, Raleigh Chapter of American Sewing Guild, Pine Tree Quilter’s Guild and more.
