A DIY Sustainability Workshop with Joe Kenlan.

In this workshop, we will be building a double-sided mortared stonewall. The end product will be an artful planter box that serves as a barrier for a large welcome sign for the Eco-Industrial Plant. Instruction will cover basic stone masonry principals, different sorts of materials, and tools needed.
The workshop with focus on actual, hands-on construction techniques. We will be building as a team for most of the workshop. Participants will receive instruction on handling stone and mortar as they create this piece together.
Please bring work gloves and eye protection. If you have tools (hammers chisels, trowels, etc.) you are encouraged to bring them. Extra tools will be on hand for those who don’t have them.
This experience will be physical but not too taxing – no one will be expected to do something they are not comfortable with. Dress for two days outside in the elements – layer up. You will have access to indoor spaces, bathrooms, showers, and a kitchen to put your lunch in.
The class should be both instructive and rewarding for newcomers and those with some masonry experience. Bring visions, inspirations, and specific questions about your own home projects – it’s not every day that you get to spend quality time with an experienced stone mason like Joe!

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Joe Kenlan has been laying stone in the Chatham County area since 1975, constructing landscape and building walls, fireplaces, waterfalls, walks, paths, patios and pretty much everything you can think of. He has taught workshops here and elsewhere around the country on his own and with the Stone Foundation, an international organization of stone craftsmen and stone lovers (www.stonefoundation.org). He sometimes thinks of stone as his second language.
