“Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this, too, was a gift.”

Mary Oliver, Thirst

Join us in keeping this much needed conversation about death alive.  This “Death Cafe” style conversation is open ended, free flowing, and organic.  From Advanced Directives to honoring our ancestors.  From home funerals and green burials to artistic expressions of grief.  Let’s gather as a community and delve deeper into the topic of death and all of its facets.

This June 5th we will welcome Sara Williams and Jenny Bingham, home funeral guides, to speak on the topic of Death Midwifery and Home Funerals.

This event is open to anyone.  This is a vulnerable topic – so feel free to express your feelings.  Bring your poetry.  Bring your wisdom.  Bring your knowledge.  Bring your tears.  But most of all – bring an open mind.

And yes.  Cupcakes will be served.

About our hosts:

shroudingsisters

Sara Williams and Jenny Bingham

Sara (pictured left) speaks on many topics: home funerals, Veterans’ funerals, green burial, and more. She is a trained home funeral guide, a hospice volunteer, and serves on the Board of Directors for the National Home Funeral Alliance and her local Funeral Consumer’s Alliance (FCA-Piedmont). Sara started and facilitates her local Death Café. She adores the word “psychopomp” and Mexican sugar skulls. Sara’s interest in and acceptance of death has been making people uncomfortable since she announced as a young girl that she loved to hang out in cemeteries. She continues to try and change people’s negative feelings toward death and dying, and is passionate about us reclaiming our sacred tradition of caring for our own dead. Sara is working on establishing her area’s first exclusively green cemetery. Memento mori!
Jenny (pictured right) is a home funeral guide with Sacred Passages who has an MSW and a training in gestalt therapy. She has worked for hospice and is currently a hospice volunteer. Working with death and dying has been a calling for Jenny for the past 15 years. Jenny has a deep interest in working with others with the transformational power of death and dying. She leads workshops, groups and works individually facilitating the completing of end of life planning. In her area she offers support and guidance for those who chose a home funeral and vigil.
