“Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this, too, was a gift.”
― Mary Oliver, Thirst
Death Cafes are part of a global movement. The idea was born from the writings of Bernard Crettaz, a Swiss sociologist who said talking about death leads to authenticity.
At a Death Cafe the community gathers to discuss life and death, with a serving of tea and cake. The objective is to raise awareness through open conversation about a topic that remains deeply taboo. The idea is “to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of our (finite) lives.”
During the Death Cafe we’ll discuss death, celebrate life and enjoy time together. This gathering is open to the community. It is a group-directed discussion of issues about death and dying, with no agenda, objectives, or themes. This is a discussion group, not a grief support or educational seminar. We aim to talk about death, enhance life, and of course, eat cake.
Death Cafes are not-for- profit, and held in a respectful, confidential, safe space. There is no intention of leading people to any conclusion, product, or course of action.
Suggested donation $3-$5 to cover expenses.
