Griefwalker is an extraordinary portrait of master storyteller, author and Harvard-trained theologian Stephen Jenkinson, who teaches that death empowers us to live and that we must know grief well in order to appreciate our own lives. Many may find Jenkinson’s belief that our deaths are not something to be denied or avoided but ‘befriended’ as challenging; he points out that not every culture fears death as we do. The film carries viewers into the lives of those confronting death, as well as those learning how to help people die well. Combining beautiful imagery of the impermanence of nature and the actuality of dying, Griefwalker weaves an illuminating picture of a remarkable man and leaves us with a deeper understanding of how our deaths could be held as a ‘prized possession;’ as the foundation of our love of life and the means by which we create true community, culture and meaning.
Griefwalker is a National Film Board of Canada feature documentary film, directed by Tim Wilson. It is a lyrical, poetic portrait of Stephen Jenkinson’s work with dying people. Filmed over a twelve year period, Griefwalker shows Jenkinson in teaching sessions with doctors and nurses, in counselling sessions with dying people and their families. While paddling a birch bark canoe, he speaks in meditative and frank exchanges with the film’s director about the origins and consequences of his ideas about how we live and die.

About our Teacher:
Stephen Jenkinson lives a handmade, off-grid life beside the River of Abundance and Time in Ottawa, Canada. He is a master storyteller, international speaker and teacher, author, spiritual activist and farmer. Formerly a program director at a major Canadian hospital and medical-school assistant director, Jenkinson is now a sought-after workshop leader, speaker and consultant to palliative care and hospice organizations.
He is the founder of the Orphan Wisdom School, a teaching and learning house for the skills of deep living and making human culture. The school is rooted in knowing history, being claimed by ancestry, and working for a time yet to come.
