For this workshop, we will be building classic, simple dry-stacked stone retaining walls using basic hand tools. We may use mortar for the top course for sitting, but the walls themselves will be built without. This will be a hands-on workshop, but no one will be expected to do anything they are not comfortable with and we will demonstrate various techniques for moving heavy objects safely and comfortably. Dress for outdoor work and please bring gloves and eye protection. If you have tools bring those as well (hammers, chisels, etc). We’ll provide as many as we can.

About the instructor:
Joe Kenlan has been laying stone in the Chatham County area since 1975 constructing landscape and building walls, fireplaces, waterfalls, walks, paths, patios and pretty much everything you can think of. He has taught workshops here and elsewhere around the country on his own and with the Stone Foundation, an international organization of stone craftsmen and stone lovers (www.stonefoundation.org). He sometimes thinks of stone as his second language.
