An Abundance NC DIY Sustainability Workshop with Farmer Doug Joens
Saturday, September 19, 9am-3pm

Located at the Plant at 220 Lorax Lane, Pittsboro, NC.
For directions, click here.

Join Farmer Doug Jones for a primer on seed saving with an optional Advanced portion that delves even deeper.

BASIC SEED SAVING (9 am – 1 pm) includes: hands-on demonstration of simple seed saving techniques, basic botany for success in
seed production, how to improve and adapt varieties to local conditions, and variety recommendations from our trials.  Go home with a few seeds to plant in your own garden.

ADVANCED PLANT BREEDING (1 pm – 3 pm) explores techniques for processing tricky seeds like lettuce, leeks, chard, and radishes – and selecting for specific traits aligned with the goals of your farm or garden.

Lunch is provided by Angelina’s Kitchen in Pittsboro.  This Greek inspired Farm-to-Table restaurant uses meat and vegetables from local farms.  Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are plentiful!

This workshop is very dear to Abundance NC as seed saving was one of the action items of our 3rd Annual Climate Change Adaptation Conference this year.

With over 40 years of experience, Farmer Doug Jones is indeed a master farmer.  He began his career in the Northeast and migrated down to our neck of the woods 16 years ago. While production farming is his profession, his passion is seed saving and plant breeding. He spends great energy developing and selecting the most desirable strains of his plants to increase their genetic strength and adaptation to local climate and soil conditions.
