Our bus guide will be the infamous Will Hooker who will discuss highlights of both farms and who designed the Whitted Bowers Farm with owners Rob and Cheri Bowers which is located in Cedar Grove, NC.
About the farms:
Maple Spring Gardens is a family owned and operated farm in northwestern Orange County. They raise about 80 different varieties of vegetables, as well as cut flowers, small fruits and culinary and medicinal herbs. Their produce is available at Carrboro Farmers Market and Durham Farmers Market and by subscription to their CSA (community supported agriculture).
The farm is owned by Ken Dawson and Libby Outlaw. Farming has been Ken’s full time occupation since 1984.
Learn about some of the strategies used to turn worn out fields eroded by tobacco land into a fertile and producing farm.
Whitted Bowers Farm is a 52 acre certified organic and certified biodynamic family farm located in Cedar Grove, NC begun in 2005 by Rob and Cheri Bowers.
Their produce is available at the Carrboro Farmer’s Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. You may also see their produce at the following Triangle, NC venues: Lantern Restaurant, Il Palio, Pazzo, Oak Leaf, Scratch Bakery, Chicken Bridge Bakery, Pancuito, Glass Half Full, ONE Restaurant and Neal’s Deli.
We open the farm each May for Pick Your Own strawberries and in July for U-pic blueberries. We specialize in fruit and heirloom vegetables which include strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, figs, heirloom melon and watermelon, artichokes, sweet potatoes, garlic, culinary and medicinal herbs.
Will Hooker, permaculture design expert:
Will is a registered landscape architect and currently an Emeritus Professor in the NC State Horticulture Department where he taught landscape garden design for 34 years. In 1988 while on a sabbatical study leave riding his bicycle across the continent, Will became concerned with the lack of people actually out on the land. It seemed that no one was paying attention to the human impact on Nature. In searching for a stronger message about the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems, he discovered permaculture, and has been practicing and teaching the tenets of this sustainable living methodology ever since.
