An Abundance NC DIY Sustainability Workshop with Will Endres
Sunday, October 18, 9am-4:30pm  (rain date 10/25)

Located in Hillsborough, NC  (Venue TBD)

will and children_picmonkeyedJoin nationally renowned herbalist, wildcrafter, outdoorsman, and wisdom giver – Will Endres – for a daylong course on the abundant wild herbs that our North Carolina forests hold.  Black Walnut Hull.  Wild Cherry Bark.  Blackberry Root.  Yellow Dock.  These are just a few of the many medicinal herbs and plants we may come upon as we explore the woods of Cedar Grove, NC.

Durning this hands-on workshop, we will cover the basics of practical plant identification, gathering/harvesting, processing, medicinal usages, and the making of tinctures.  The highlight of this particular wild herb walk will be the chance to dig and process Calamus Root on site and make your own tincture from it.  Calamus root is an herb that Will has an extensive relationship with and the subject of his first book that he is currently working on.

This workshop is open to all levels and has the potential to be very self-directed and student-driven.  What herbs have you seen in your backyard that you’ve always wanted to learn about?  What curiosities do you have about folk medicine?  Which of Mother Nature’s treats can you nibble on when you’re hiking along a trail?  Will is a wealth of knowledge.  Come prepared to use your hands and expand your mind.

We’ll start our day at an old gravel parking lot in the heart of Hillsborough.  This seemingly dead place is wrought with wild things. Chickweed. Loblollies.  Eastern Red Cedar.  And a whole host of other herbs and plants called “Waste Ground Weeds.”  We’ve chosen to start here for three reasons.  First, this lot is a central spot to meet up and carpool to the forests of Cedar Grove.  Second, this botanical habitat is drastically different from that of the woods we’ll be spending the majority of our day in, providing a different learning experience.  Third, there is a railroad a brief walk from this gravel lot.  Along  its tracks is one of the few sites in the area that is home to Poison Hemlock.  Here, Will has the chance to teach us one of the most important lessons in plant identification – what not to pick.

proccessing_picmonkeyedFrom there, we’ll carpool as a class to a remote farm in Cedar Grove, 12 miles North of Hillsborough, and begin our walk in the woods.  When Will walks in the woods, he’s a force of wondrous wisdom.  There’s something magical about being lead through the forest by someone with ancestral knowledge and a spiritual connection to the land.  It’s a celebration.  An exploration.  A journey.  With him, we’ll locate, identify, and sustainably gather a host of wild fresh herbs.  Next, we’ll work our way to a nearby farm to break for lunch (provided by the Staff of Abundance) and get to know one another.  We’ll spend the rest of our afternoon processing the herbs we’ve collected, learning their therapeutic uses, and making our own medicinal fluid extracts to bring home.
