youth sustainability and energy tours
Bring your class, camp, home-schooler group, church, or any handful of kids K-12 to “The Plant” for sustainability tours. Each year we welcome students and families by the busload! The Children’s Sustainability Tours target K-12 students – we cater to camps and families of all kinds.
Tours typically last 1-2 hours depending on grade level, attention span, and interest of the student. Content can be tailored by tour guides and instructors to suit the grade level as well as the focus of the classroom curriculum.
A general tour usually consists of an introduction to the sustainable businesses of the Eco-Industrial Plant, a brief tour of a biodiesel plant, a brief tour of a small scale organic farm, and free time to walk the Pittsboro Farm & Forest Trail.
Additional workshops are available seasonally for a fee. Examples include a honeybee workshop, harvesting your own lunch, making biofuel, a guided nature trail walk, trail maintenance days, and special Abundance events.
PITTSBORO FARM & FOREST TRAIL – This year, we’re happy to announce the birth of a .78 mile long nature trail that circles the entire Eco-Industrial Park (often referred to as “The Plant”). On this trail, you’ll experience key components of sustainable living. This trail tours a small scale organic farm and orchard, a constructed wetland that treats the property’s storm water, a typical Piedmont forest and stream ecosystem, pollinator gardens, a riparian zone filled with indigenous hardwood trees, a solar array that powers the facility, and maybe even some outsider art.
Outside of the nature trail, The Plant offers a playground for little kids, a garden sized chess game, and a swing set for the larger crowd.
Each visitor to the Plant is guaranteed to leave thinking differently about renewable energy, local food, and inspired community. That’s our mission. It’s what we do. And we feel we might as well bring the kids along for the ride.
Tour cost: $150 per group (up to 30 people). If your group exceeds 30, we ask for $5 per additional group member. Pre-payment via invoice is required.
At Abundance NC, we strive to meet the needs of ALL members of our community. Some scholarships and aid are available on a case-by-case basis. If you’d like to ask if your students, group, or school qualify – please give us a call at 919-533-5181.
