Fayetteville Labyrinth Project

The Fayetteville Labyrinth Project (FLP) is delighted to have been approved for sponsorship by Abundance NC!

Our mission is to secure an accessible public space in Fayetteville, NC and provide funding for the creation and maintenance of a walking labyrinth to be dedicated to U.S. service personnel and veterans to offer a welcoming public space for spiritual healing, mindfulness meditation, and/or religious practice, so as to bring those who have served in the U.S. armed forces together with the civilian citizens of Fayetteville to walk in quiet contemplation as one community.

What is a labyrinth? A labyrinth is a meandering path, often one directional, with a singular path leading to a center. Labyrinths are an ancient archetype dating back 4000 years or more. They are tools for personal, psychological, and spiritual transformation. Increasingly, veterans’ support groups and institutions across the country – including the VA – have been utilizing labyrinths in conjunction with therapy programs for veterans. There are therapeutic labyrinths at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, Beale Air Force Base in California, and at Walter Reed in Bethesda, Maryland. The primary benefit to such a labyrinth includes providing a means for respite from war-savaged bodies and minds. A labyrinth is a place for quiet contemplation, meditation, and prayer. Leave your worries at the entrance and move through the path to the center. Allow yourself to find the space offered in the labyrinth to discover the compassion and forgiveness in your heart, to rethink solutions to a problem, to make a spiritual connection to the Creator or Universe, to imagine a different version of yourself living your life, pray for or send loving kindness to a loved one in trouble, or an acquaintance in need, or perhaps an enemy in pain.

The possibilities are endless! We hope to have a completed 11 circuit Chartres style outdoor labyrinth within the next 18 to 24 months! We look forward to working with Abundance NC and providing the Fayetteville community with a valuable resource!
